Navigating Festival Season: Style Tips for Unpredictable British Weather
Pablo FerratFestival season is approaching, and if you're anything like us, planning outfits that can handle everything from scorching sun to sudden downpours is half the battle! After several years of festival mishaps (including one memorable Glastonbury where our white trainers became permanently brown), we've learned some valuable lessons about dressing for the unpredictable British festival season.
Layer, layer, layer is our mantra. We start with breathable basics, add something warm, and always pack a lightweight waterproof. Those tiny packable rain jackets may not look particularly stylish, but they're absolute lifesavers when dark clouds appear over the main stage. We've found that ripstop nylon options pack down smaller and dry faster than their polyester counterparts – a crucial detail when you're moving between stages all day!
Footwear is where most festival plans fall apart. This year, we're investing in pairs of waterproof leather boots rather than wellies – they're more versatile for varying weather and actually support your feet after hours of dancing. We pair them with colorful socks that show when we roll up our jeans for an easy style boost. Some of us have also discovered the joy of waterproof hiking sandals for warmer festivals – they provide grip on muddy terrain while allowing our feet to breathe.
Accessories that multitask are worth their weight in gold. Wide-brimmed hats offer sun protection but also help keep rain off your face, while crossbody bags with waterproof compartments keep phones and festival essentials safe. We've become converts to lightweight microfiber towels that can serve as picnic blankets, makeshift ponchos, or even scarves when the temperature drops in the evening.
For makeup, we've learned to embrace waterproof everything! A good setting spray can be the difference between looking fresh all day and having your carefully applied makeup slide down your face during the first shower. Cream products tend to last longer in humid conditions, and a tinted lip balm with SPF protection serves multiple purposes.
One of our best discoveries has been dry shampoo sheets – they take up virtually no space in a backpack and can refresh hair instantly when proper washing isn't an option. Similarly, biodegradable wet wipes are essential for quick refreshes between acts.
